Discovery #1:

I've finally done it -- after months of making noise about trying out Linux, I come to you now live from Linux Mint, an Ubuntu-based distro which is extremely aesthetically pleasing. *_* (that is to say: omg it's so BEAUTIFUL and SHINY and FAST and, and, and...) Because I like safety nets, I didn't jettison Windows entirely but did the whole partition-and-dual-boot thing as explained on roughly a thousand tutorial websites. Turns out this is good because battery life is noticeably less on Mint than on XP; otherwise I've been completely seduced thus far.

Discovery #2:

For anyone who regularly uses more than one computer: Dropbox is a MIRACLE, omg. *_* Like the name implies, it provides a file dropbox you can access via secure login from any computer with the program installed. So instead of emailing yourself 7 different versions of the same file as you keep making changes or messing with your USB drive out for a MEASLY 22K WORD DOCUMENT (...you can see that has always bothered me XD) you just pop into the dropbox and you're all set. For a variety of reasons involving a laptop that doesn't like Photobucket/LJ Photo/basically any photo uploading service and a printer that only has a PS2 port, this is a dream come true for me.

I keep meaning to post about Media Stuff; aside from catching up on reading real books I've seen a truly obscene amount of television over the last few weeks (Torchwood, Doctor Who, The West Wing, the new BSG episodes) while I hang around waiting on each successive step of the interview/application process for a Particular Thing. But that will have to wait for later, as [livejournal.com profile] ettezag, encouraged by the comment thread on my last post, is coming over in a short while to force the beginning of Merlin on me. Er. That came out a bit wrong but you all know what I mean.

p.s. hands up anyone who would read "arthur and merlin fall through the rift to cardiff"

Linux is indeed incredibly shiny, it's true. Also using it makes me feel smart, even though I have one of those user-friendly distros for people who are scared of breaking something and/or addicted to graphical user interfaces. XD

YOU WERE DOING WELL UNTIL YOU GOT TO DRAGONBALL. *sniffs* I understand the life-outside-of-the-computer part! Admittedly my life outside the computer has mainly consisted of going to people's houses to watch the aforementioned television shows, but sometimes also interviews. XD Augh, I want this internshiiiiip. *grabby hands*

I am extraordinarily paranoid about jinxing myself and getting my/other people's hopes up, so I'm avoiding saying anything beyond, It's an internship and it's not in Alaska. Once I get accepted or rejected I can go into more detail. XD

Oh man, I forgot your mother was in New Zealand. *_* *ENVIOUS SIGH*

*.* So if I ever get another windows computer, I am going to bombard you with questions. My last foray into Linux was a loooooong time ago.

C-can't you use Gdocs for just documents though?

From: [identity profile] acchikocchi.livejournal.com
Ooh, go ahead! :D The one stumbling block was getting my wireless card working correctly but after a lot of forum trawling I figured it out. Everything else went pretty smoothly!

I've never quite managed to bond with Gdocs! It's a quirk, I know, but I find fic comes easiest when I'm using Word and for everything else I prefer (of all things) Wordpad the most. Just one of those things, I guess.

Ahahahaha that didn't even occur to me, and then after seeing your comment I had to go check and make sure I really was talking about an actual port type and not making it up. *g* They're the ports that predated USB, you know, the circular ones in the back of the computer towers for keyboards and mice.

I would totally read that crossover. I already harangued convinced [livejournal.com profile] roundaboutit to write me a Doctor Who/Merlin crossover over here (http://community.livejournal.com/calreskuee/24482.html), so I'm clearly an already committed fangirl of these ideas. Hope you enjoy!

sakjd;s YAY I'm not the only person to find this exciting. ^____^

(Upon second thought Torchwood Three may be taking a short trip to Camelot instead simply because I'm too lazy to write out how Merlin and Arthur adjust to guns and cars and all that and I think I can still preserve all the scenes I want to ahahahaha like Arthur trying to co-opt Ianto as his new (perfect) manservant. heh heh heh.)
