[trans] Spitz - Wakaba (Young Leaves)

We were walking along as we always did, bathed in gentle light
Though I strained to look beyond the door, I couldn't see anything but a deep fog
I was convinced that this would last forever
But it slipped away through my fingers
I can remember so many things
The neighborhood sky sunny with your smile when the flowers were in full bloom
The cool breeze, the birdsong - I felt it all, next to you
Without realizing how thin the thread that connected us was
In a time so buoyant and innocent I forgot what it was I’d forgotten
When you, serious for once, whispered "I'm scared"
I didn't understand
We were about to burn precious things
So that the fire warming us wouldn't die
I can remember so many things
Rolling around telling silly stories when the flowers were in full bloom
The pain of breaking into a run barefoot - even that felt good
Pretending not to know what "self-centered" even meant
I can remember every moment
Bewildered by unexpected rain, when the young leaves were at their thickest
It's so nostalgic I want to cry - but for now, I turn the key in the lock
My stupid dream is coming just a little bit closer
Now, I begin to walk a road you don't know

Date: 2013-08-30 11:39 pm (UTC)I've never come across a band like this, there is nothing quite like them for pure heart wrenching emotion, and your translations add the extra dimensions I felt but couldn't confirm. If you are able to do any more, I'd be eternally grateful...I've never quite been able to get yoru wo kakeru, sazanami, beginner, and I've had a go at sarasara (best Spitz song in years!) but the final 25% eludes me...my wife is Japanese but she always says its too hard to get the nuances....

Date: 2013-09-04 08:17 am (UTC)I think you're spot on about the necessity of "getting" the songs -- there are certain songs out there I still don't feel like I really understand, and it's no good trying to translate the vague language if you don't think you know. (Though who knows if what we think is the same as what Kusano was thinking...) I've always felt moderately comforted by the fact that most of the Japanese fansites have sections devoted to wondering what exactly various lyrics mean. XD
Anyway, to answer your question I most definitely plan on translating more. :) I totally agree that Sarasara is the best single in ages, for one. And oh man, you mentioned Yoru wo kakeru, the first Spitz song I fell in love with and the one I keep coming back to, wondering how to capture it right.... I actually think I finally have a pretty solid draft around here, so I'll try to get that posted soon. Once again, thank you so much -- I'm always happy to hear from a fellow Spitz fan and this just totally made my day
