So, Mt. Redoubt's about to erupt! Um. Wow.

The last major eruption I can remember is Mt. Spurr, when I was six years old. My mother was reading the beginning of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to my brother and me, and we looked out the window and saw that it was completely dark outside, at 8 PM in the middle of August. (In August the sun still doesn't set until 10 PM). At which point my dad came in and told us it had erupted. I remember hosing ash out of the gutters outside a couple days later but I don't remember much about the eruption itself except the dark sky, and that we never did finish reading the book.

Redoubt is 100 miles from Anchorage, Spurr was 75, so whether we get hit with ash really depends on the wind when it erupts (which could be, er, any minute now). This is, of course, the week my parents are at a business conference in Hawaii. I think I'm all set, though. I have plenty of supplies, the car's covered up, there is no way I'm letting kitty out of the house.

*deep breath* Okay! Bring it!

OH YES. It's snowing right now. It's been snowing for the last couple days. ASH SNOW, MM.

AVO has a twitter (http://twitter.com/alaska_avo) to keep us updated, it's pretty great. XD

Yeah, this is one of those things where -- I'm sorry, but you can't get this anywhere else in this country except Hawaii. XD (And Hawaiian volcanoes are different!) I feel kind of excited and kind of twitchy. *g*

Yay . . . snow? ;adlskfjaofwe I actually don't really miss that. :p ASH - A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF ICK.

Oh twitter. How nifty. *stalks it*

Or you know, Oregon/Washington/the lovely lovely West Coast. I used to have a thing about volcanoes. I still sort of do. >.> So interesting!

(some part of me goes 'they aren't tornadoes' which i find one of the most frightening natural phenomenon ever - at least IMHO.)

...oh, that's right, I forgot about the Cascades! Uh. Well, that's what I meant. XD

I had a thing about volcanoes, for values of "thing" meaning "incapacitating fear". Although I got over it. But you wanted to be a geologist at one point, right? :D

asdjks;d TORNADOES SCARE THE HELL OUT OF ME. they - they just come down! and pick everything up and smash it! and like, they're fast and scary asdkjsal;ds yeah, sorry, I'll take a volcano or a wildfire over a tornado, thanks.

Volcanic eruptions are a kind of natural disaster I'm not at all familiar with, so that sounds scary, but I imagine it's not as bad as I think it is. XD Stay safe, and I hope you don't get too much ash.

Thank youuuu. :) They're pretty rare things, yeah. *g* I don't know enough geology to be able to say why it's not that bad to us here -- I mean, we don't have to worry about lava or flaming rocks falling from the sky or anything, just ash, but I know nothing about volcanoes to tell you why. It's just scary enough that it's exciting but not so much that you're really worried, as long as you know enough not to go outside breathing in volcanic ash. XD But, yes, your thoughts are much appreciated. :)

Fortunately it's been snowing a lot so our cat's been less interested in going outside than usual -- hopefully he stays that way. And if not, he can just yowl all he want, he's not going anywhere!

:O flksda freaky DDD: Hopefully the ash decides to go away from you?

I'm in Hawaii now and occasionally we get vog (I had NO idea wtf that was before coworkers told me) but I'm not on the big island so I don't have to worry about lava or falling flaming rocks or anything :X

frankly speaking I had no clue there were volcanoes up there *fails* I never saw much of any of them besides on canary islands, but next month I go visit mt aso XD

which leads me to a not that related note. I might have the chance to do a day trip tp nagasaki next week. daytrip being the keyword. Any must sees you are aware of which you'd laugh at me if I miss them? XDD
