Oh -- wow, where to begin. Thank you so, so much for your kind and thoughtful comments. You mentioned something that no one else has that was definitely on my mind -- that no matter how mature she may be professionally, she's still just a teenager. So yes, there's going to be a certain amount of pushing and pulling in reaction to her parents no matter what her career is. ;) I really enjoyed writing Olaya and Patricia is well. Obviously the key relationship is between Zaida and David, but I think one of the things that would help differentiate between how David grew up and how Zaida grew up is Patricia's strong personality, how she holds her own with David -- and understands herself what it's like to play, especially as a girl.
I did play soccer myself for several years, but it was pretty laid-back rec soccer and I was mostly in defense. :) So there's a little bit of memory and a little bit of imagination at work, and it's really gratifying to hear from a competitive player that that mindset successfully came across.
