Reading up on female writers of the Meiji and Taisho periods was not where I expected to run into the term "doujinshi". But it's short for "doujin zasshi" (for non-Japanese speakers, "group magazine", roughly) and originally the doujin in question were literary societies/salons/circles. They sprung up during the Meiji period, organized around either a particular school of thought or later a particular literary figure (e.g. Natsume Soseki), and belonging to one of these circles seems to have been an obligatory step in establishing a literary career. Anyway, each circle published in effect zines of their members' works, thus doujin zasshi. Thus CLAMP. XD

(Cursory internet research indicates manga doujin first appeared in the '50s or so.)

Oh Japan. You will never not be interesting.

I remember stumbling over that interesting fact when I studied for the intermediate exam, one of my exam topics was Meiji female writers, too. :D

Oh, neat! :D Yeah, this is all really eye-opening to me - I'm not particularly well-read in Japanese literature to begin with, and all the female writers I've read have been classical or very recent. Nogami Yaeko, though, sounds like just about the greatest person ever. *g*

e.g. Natsume Soseki

Now I can't stop wondering if there's Kokoro doujinshi — the worst part is knowing that inevitably it is out there, the best part is that, utilizing all of my willpower, I can actually prevent myself from acknowledging this unsettling truth! The fact that there's a drama CD for it with Ishida Akira is bad enough oh god and now it's gonna be an anime I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO LOOK FOR DOUJIN AGAIN

That's so logical, it hurts. You should have made something wiggedy-whack up entirely for the lulz.
