tenchijin : mirage of blaze :: shinsengumi! : peacemaker kurogane

How, exactly, did I get as far as June without hearing the about this year's taiga dorama? In retrospect [livejournal.com profile] pithetaphish must have mentioned it when she was giving me a rundown of the new drama season in Shirakawago, because I remember getting Tsumabuki Satoshi mixed up with Tsukamoto Takashi, but I recall nothing else. For anyone else out there living in blissful ignorance, let me fix that for you: the main character is Naoe Kanetsugu, meaning supporting characters include not only Uesugi Kagekatsu but also - oh yes - Naoe Nobutsuna and Uesugi Kagetora. And Uesugi Kenshin, as played by Abe Hiroshi, and Date Masamune, as played by ahahaha Matsuda Ryuhei, and the rest of the usual slew of familiar Sengoku names. (Oh lord, Shirota Yuu is playing Sanada Yukimura. Very clever, guys. -_- Come to think of it I think [livejournal.com profile] mananeh told me that part before, so it looks like the fault is with my sieve of a memory and not my network of informants.) No sign of Nagahide, though, more's the pity. Further details here and here, including synopses. Oh god they have one of those relationship flow charts. Do I really want to see what everyone looks l - yes I do. *CLICKS*

Kanetsugu, Kagekatsu and Kagetora: ...............nicely cast. Ahem.

Real Naoe Naoe Nobutsuna: Aw, come on. XD

Yes, yes, I know, the producers probably didn't read Mirage (OR DID THEY). But while I have no problem - based on photographic evidence, at least - conflating this Kagetora and that Kagetora, Naoe does make for something of a stumbling block. Sigh. Though if I remember correctly Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu were just-as-if-not-more... no, we're stopping right there. I have no time for taiga dramas and their low production standards! None!

This entire post probably means nothing to those who are not familiar with Mirage of Blaze aka Honoo no Mirage/Honoo no Shinkirou. (Or, you know, Sengoku-era Japanese history, but I know my flist.) I. I don't have the stamina to try and explain it coherently. 40 volume novel series, Sengoku-jidai history, esoteric Buddhism, reincarnation and other forms of the supernatural, protagonists that make Sakurazuka Seishirou and Sumeragi Subaru look the model of a happy and well-adjusted relationship.

Forget no time for taiga dramas, I have no time to resurrect any kind of interest in Mirage. *sobs*

Oh man it has been FOREVER since I watched Mirage of Blaze. Talk about nostalgic. o.o

Oddly enough, I never saw the anime! I jumped straight into the novels, which was probably not the best idea I've ever had. XD

[identity profile] peroxidepest17.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha you probably got a fuller picture of everything than I did. Though I did thoroughly enjoy the series anyway. XD

From what I understand, the anime covers the first ten novels or so? I have no idea how well it covers the story arcs it did tackle, but inasmuch as "the fuller picture" includes thirty more volumes.... well.... XD

Your way is the saner one. "Time suck" doesn't even begin to cover it. (On one hand, fuller NaoexKagetora payoff, which by the time it came I felt I as a reader deserved, and I don't often get that feeling. XD On the other hand, oh, TRAGEDY.)

[identity profile] peroxidepest17.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man the series. I wanted payoff SO SO SO MUCH. Not to say it wasn't done well for the series, just always want more.

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC it covered vol.1, then skipped a few, then sort of telescoped vol.5-8, then did 9---ah eff it. XD

Ah, thank you. That... figures. As with all else Mirage-related, even what should be straightforward makes one's head spin. XD

The relationship chart doesn't work. :P

Also, the idea of Shirota Yuu in a taiga drama is kind of strange. o_o But mostly because I only associate him with jewelry and tennis. xD

Hm, the link works fine for me?

How familiar are you with the tennis connection? Because his taiga role is - not entirely unrelated. XD

[identity profile] pixisticks.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
:O All I get is a 'hotlinking' image.

Not at all! 8D I never read or watched Prince of Tennis, so I have no idea what it's even about, let alone his role. XD

♥ ♥ ♥ I want to go to Japaaaaaaan

Huh. Must be okay for me because I first got there legitimately. >_> *removes link*

Ahhhh. Well, he's team captain of Our Heroes. The important point, though, is that the captain and vice-captain of Big Rival School are named Yukimura and Sanada, respectively, after the very historical personage Shirota's playing here. *g* (Well, technically after a fictional representation of the historical personage... details, details.)

[identity profile] pixisticks.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
XD perhaps!

...XD Very clever. Oh Japan, how I love thee. Semi-relatedly, I found my old handmade Japanese history book the other day~ I should brush up. :D

[identity profile] matchynishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
No idea of any of the historical details/people you just flailed about, but I read this "(Oh lord, Shirota Yuu is playing Sanada Yukimura" and went O________O before I realized Sanada Yukimura was one... person... >___>

Yeah, Konomi enjoyed lame jokes like that. XD Alas, I don't remember my Indian history well enough to think of a good parallel for you. Let's just say he's very very well known and Sanada and Yukimura in PoT caused Japanese history students everywhere to go "..........."

(So it's pretty hilarious that Tezuka Shirota's playing him. XD)

[identity profile] matchynishi.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's part of why I went O_O coz it's like HAHA WE ALWAYS KNEW THAT THEY WERE... KIND OF OT3ISH
