So I thought a great way of verifying my perception of Graham Coxon would be to check out J-fandom and see what the doujinshi were like the consensus is over there (the consensus is to call him "megane-kun", which right there validates most of my thoughts). Dipping one's toes in the nebulous "Western music" fandom is a dangerous proposition, ahahaha. This means everything from the Beatles to Nirvana to MCR/FOB/PatD/etc. to Radiohead to Erlend Oye to the Libertines and company -- like, all on the same website, sometimes. The rockslash vs. bandom vs. bandslash people would be thrilled; here's the answer to those thorny terminology problems! XD

This is the first time I've seen the English terms slash, fanfic/fanfiction, and -- notably -- RPS in Japanese fandom. (And in one notable instance, incest.) Kind of threw me, actually. *g* I think I've mentioned before about the ridiculous lengths Japanese JE fansites go to hide and/or protect themselves, generally involving elaborate puzzles to determine passwords and URLs (as presumably they have much more to fear, ahahaha), and while there's a little bit of this here far fewer sites are protected and the splash pages are much more up front about what you'll find behind them. To a disconcerting degree, when you're used to vague explanations that generally consist of, "If you don't know what 801 stands for, please press your back button". XD;; For the ones that did have some sort of protection, the questions almost always seemed to use one or more of those English terms. On a shallower note, the site design and graphics are on average way beyond the average Japanese fansite, which generally remind me of the mid 1990s.

Oh, also, all the site owners have last.fm accounts. XD

The quality of the art itself is generally fantastic, as expected. *g* The bandom people would go crazy if they knew what they were missing. (Interested parties -- in any of these areas -- may apply for relevant links. XD) As for the subjects, I was expecting, you know, Blur, Oasis, Franz Ferdinand, the Libs, the Decaydance label bands, etc. -- I was not expecting to come across fanart of, say, SebastiAn or Ed Banger (aka "Ed-ojisan). XD;;; The former is especially popular, for the record. The feeling was similar to the first time I heard D.A.N.C.E. in the credits of cartoon KAT-TUN. "Wait... but..." And then there's Bloc Party -- I mean, every time I saw a drawing of Matt Tong, it was like "Oh look, it's Oshitari Yuushi."

Other popular subjects: Alex Kapranos as a cat.

The lesson we have learned today is that Japanese fandom will always surpass my expectations. XD

Related: Further reading reveals Noodle (the Harajuku Girl of Gorillaz) has a crush on Graham. (Direct quote: "Who rocks harder, Jimmy Page or Graham Coxon?" "Graham, of course!") Oh, Damon.

Not related at all: Neil Gaiman's plugging Momus on his blog? I am so disappointed. XD

When Backstreet Boys was big in the US and while still popular in Asia, the Japanese fans had these awesome 2-D rom's/games I could download and play where the bsb boys were in some sort of rpg and either turned into zombie's or ate the zombies. It was something I'd never forget.

not expecting to come across fanart of, say, SebastiAn or Ed Banger.

This is me rolling all over my bedroom floor, laughing. *_*

Re: site design and graphics, the first thing I thought about was how obsessed western and Korean fan cultures are with photographs of their musicians, and how few Japanese fansites I've ever seen have integrated images, official or otherwise, into their designs. Is there any particular reason springing to mind about why the bandom sites might have a different level of graphics?

dsjakdl;s I know, right?? I believe the latter was actually referred to as "Ed-ojisan." Uncle Ed. ._.

Yes, exactly. Hmmmm. A lot of the art had a different aesthetic than what I've seen previously -- not surprising as they are real people and not manga characters (not that there wasn't plenty of manga influence in places as well. *g*) -- and those sites had great design, but I'm not sure why that would be...? I started to notice this maybe halfway through my browsing, so I probably need more data points. XD

[identity profile] brustreet.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
It also occurred to me that maybe it's related to selection bias -- for example, whenever I look at the blogs of Koreans who love western music that's not super-popular in their home country, the journals almost always belong to art-school kids who would theoretically count graphic designers among their number. Either way, I'd love to hear your conclusions after some more browsing. :)

LINKS PLS, c'mon - other than Tada Yumi I've never actually seen J-bandom fanart!

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
P.S. I'm sure in Damon and Jamie's experience, it is highly unrealistic for a small Japanese girl not to have a crush on Graham. They don't know why it is; they just know it is.

Anyway Noodle was legal in October, do you know? It's a fine day when even cartoon characters make one feel old. XD

...what a good point. XD Convenient illustration (http://ricken.tank.jp/fanart-e/html/10telecas.html). (kjasl;ds you're kidding me. oh dear. ._.) Oh, and if Tuesday's Daily Graham Lolarity was from his own forum, yesterday's is from Blur's... (http://forums.blur.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=56104)

Now for a general link sampling, ranging from excellent waercolors to oekaki and 4-panel comics. XD Pages generally contain a mish-mash of all kinds of groups unless otherwise noted. Most of the pages also have that general "LINK TO THE MAIN PAGE OR IT WILL ALL BE BALEETED" warning so if the entrance is anything more than the basic graphic/enter/こちらから it says so here. :)

Ahhhhhahaha so awesome thx. XD Yeah, Tada Yumi's sort of a scene doyenne in a way, she's been doing this since the 80s...

* Faris Rotter is indistinguishable from his shoujo manga self

* lovingly reproduced Fred Perry tops

* there are definitely bands here I wouldn't have expected anyone to draw fanart of. Not the trendy hipster acts, I mean like Kula Shaker

* OTOH it does rather feel like the boys from teh View have "arrived"

* it is really weird to see fanart of Ed Banger dudes I have seen in person

* whereas Blur make more sense as anime characters than otherwise

* Peter Doherty wears a flower print dress; Japan rejoices

* Our Liam's tambourine!! no srsly I can't stop laughing

[identity profile] acchikocchi.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
really all I can see is a big INORITE. (RIGHT DOWN TO THE KULA SHAKER.)

I swear the Blur art on discolabel looks just like a particular shoujo or maybe BL series, only despite racking my brains I can't think of which one... so presumably, yes, they're really just living breathing shoujo manga characters.

Yeah subdee was all, "I like how she just sort of decided that they were going to be the genki blond one and the annoyed dark-haired one with glasses" and I was like, "um that is actually their real personalities".

Asian fandoms are good because they think the way I do. XD; For instance peeps not only perceive Graham Coxon's 萌 quality but his 腹黑 quality, and there's not even any word for that in English let alone conceptualization.

[identity profile] lothi-x.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
...J-bandom? :3

Somehow, Japan and bandom (two of my major interests, ha!) have always been completely separate concepts in my mind, and I've never thought that they could meet. XD;; Well, I guess I know what's going to occupy me tonight. Hellooo, J-bandom!

I know, me neither! I was kind of O_O about the whole thing.

I just posted a slug of fanart site links here (http://acchikocchi.livejournal.com/75793.html?thread=1931281#t1931281); that might provide a nice gateway and then you can just hop around the link sections of the sites you like. It took me quite a bit of googling before I managed to find the right section of the internets. ;)

Well, there's no guarantee Blur will be recording anything new? (Without, er, imploding.) I think the most likely answer is that he'll come up with some entirely new insane project, like that Chinese opera. XD

they like these sick number games. there was one on a k-t site where -- i forget the exact question but the answer had to do with figuring out hayato as は・や・と = 8810.
